PGA Championship final round preview

August 12th, 2012 · No Comments

The 16 – a progress report
Rory McIlroy has a three shot lead going into the final round and wouldn’t it be great for him to proceed to victory so this ridiculous streak of 16 winners in the last 16 majors can be mercifully brought to an end. The 54 hole scores of the 11 members of the group that made the 54 hole cut are listed below.

Rory McIlroy -7
Graeme McDowell -1
Padraig Harrington -1
Phil Mickelson +1
Keegan Bradley E
Bubba Watson +2
Louis Oosthuizen +3
Ernie Els +4
Y.E. Yang +5
Charl Schwartzel +5
Darren Clarke +5

Short Putter vs. Long Putter
The top nine players on the leaderboard include six who use the regular putter, and three (in red) who use the broomstick. Each player’s odds (from are in parentheses. If McIlroy stumbles, as he did at the 2011 Masters, a lot of money can be made by picking the golfer who picks up the pieces. Should McIlroy falter, Woods is well positioned to score his first come from behind win in a major considering that he lurks only two shots behind the man in second.

Rory McIlroy – 7 – (4/7)
Carl Pettersson – 4 – (10/1)
Trevor Immelman – 3 – (25/1)
Adam Scott – 3 – (12/1)
Bo Van Pelt – 3 – (16/1)
Tiger Woods – 2 – (10/1)
Vijay Singh – 2 – (50/1)
Peter Hanson – 2 – (40/1)
Steve Stricker – 2 – (25/1)

Where did the coverage go?
After the completion of the third round this morning, TNT showed a replay of this morning’s telecast, so I switched to the Golf Channel, figuring the GC would never miss a chance to wow us with insights from Nobilo, Chamblee, and Co. on the upcoming fourth round. So, what do I get? A Feherty Show rerun, and a movie. What IS up with that?
And, get this: the Golf Channel IS going to show the final match of the Women’s USGA this afternoon opposite the final round of the PGA. Gee, I wonder which one we’ll be watching?
