Jason Dufner is on a roll

May 21st, 2012 · No Comments

Ah, life is good for Jason Dufner, Mr. Excitable.

Three weeks ago he won the Zurich Classic, his first win on the PGA Tour. A week later Dufner got married to the beautiful Amanda Boyd. Then, on Sunday, he rolled in a 25 footer to win the Byron Nelson by a shot.

As a bonus, Dufner jumped from 21st to 14th in the World Golf Ranking and strengthened his bid for a spot on the USA’s Ryder Cup team by soaring to third in the standings.  Clearly, the man is on a roll.

Dufner is the anti-clone with his half dozen super waggles, a move that differentiates him from the robots on tour. But what is most impressive are the shots that his smooth and repeatable swing produces. At the Nelson he hit 80.6% of the greens in regulation versus the field’s average of only 62.4. That’s an average of a whopping 13.1 more greens hit than his competitors did over 72 holes of play!

His driving was equally impressive as Dufner hit 75.0% of the fairways to rank second. In comparison, the field hit only 52.5%. He also hit it long, finishing ninth in driving distance with an average of 316.6 yards.

Better still, Dufner’s performance at the Nelson is part of a season long trend, not a one week hot streak. His GIR in 13 starts is 69.1%, 13th best on tour. And he ranks sixth in fairways hit with an average of 68.8%!

When you add up his consistency, accurate driving, relaxed demeanor, recent wins, and his near miss at last year’s PGA, Dufner has got to be a favorite to win at U.S. Open at Olympic five weeks from now. At he is tied for sixth at 33/1 behind Tiger Woods (8/1), Rory McIlroy (8/1), Phil Mickelson (12/1), Lee Westwood (14/1), and Luke Donald (16/1).
