Masters form chart for the final round

April 8th, 2012 · No Comments

A grand total of 19 winners in the last 21 Masters have come from the final group on Sunday. That means that you’d be crazy to bet on anyone but Phil Mickelson or Peter Hanson. Or, it could that this is one of those stats that, once mentioned, fails to predict the outcome. If you believe that, then Louis Oosthuizen, at 6/1, looks like the best bet among the chasers.

The table below shows the leader, Peter Hanson, and the eight players that are within five shots of him. The stats include their score, their odds, and their GIR.

-9 (7/2) Peter Hanson (64.8%) This 34 year old has one career top 10 in the majors and only four Euro Tour wins, so it will be no surprise if he forgets his lines on golf’s biggest stage.
-8 (11/8)  Phil Mickelson (59.3%) He has only hit about 3 in every 5 greens, which is horrible for a leader, but he is trending in the right direction with 13 on Saturday after hitting only 8 on Thursday. He’s got momentum, he’ll have the crowd, and he’s won it three times, so he certainly knows how.
-7 (6/1)  Louis Oosthuizen (74.1%) He is swinging very well as his 35 or 42 fairways hit indicates, he’s already won a major so that monkey is off his back, and his calm demeanor is suited for the heat of the big ones.
-6 (8/1)  Bubba Watson (72.2%) His extreme nervousness under pressure will probably keep him from the winner’s circle.
-5 (16/1)  Matt Kuchar (79.6%) No player with a long putter deserves to win a major – ever.

Group at -4
16/1  Lee Westwood (81/5%) Lee is leading the field in GIR, but he is looking more and more like a top 5 type player in the majors, but not a winner.
25/1  Hunter Mahan (70.4%) Mahan can get super hot, so he has a chance if the top 2 or 3 shoot around par.
33/1  Padraig Harrington (55.6%) This short game wizard has no chance.
40/1  Henrik Stenson (72.2%) His play has been way too erratic.
