Tiger Woods’ schedule is about as predictable as the sun.
He plays in the majors, the sub majors, FexExCup events, his events, tournaments where his sponsors are involved, Arnie and Jack’s events, and where he wins. Oh, and overseas where they pay him a not so small fortune just to show up. Period.
He does not play the week before the first three majors, and only plays the Bridgestone in front of the PGA because he always wins it, and it’s a WGC event.
So, to add another week before a major, making three straight, is unheard of.
He ended his deal with Buick some last year, so there is no quasi appearance money. Even though Tiger has played there eight times and won twice, he says he dislikes birdie tracks where you must go deep into the red. And yet the winning average score at Warwick Hills the last six years is -21. And lastly, Tiger loves the his home life and the range where he can pile up his precious reps.
So what gives? Maybe Tiger feels the best way to prepare for the PGA is to play his way into shape in competition, which is a novel approach considering the factors I’ve just mentioned. Perhaps he believes that Ranger Rick needs to get his behind to the course and learn to hit those fairways under competitive pressure.
Finally, with a line of W, 2t, 3t, 2t, W in his last five Buick Opens, maybe Tiger is seeking a boost in confidence at Friendly Hills, which could be needed after his MC at the British Open.
If Tiger’s new strategy works, maybe he’ll employ it elsewhere, much to the delight of his legions and the TV folks, who go bananas every time he tees it up.

I don’t know why Tiger played in the Buick, but the reason given on TV, as I understood it, was that the tournament organizers appealed to him on the basis of local economic conditions, saying the area could really benefit from the extra boost his presence would give. Maybe he was feeling altruistic; maybe he thought it unwise, from a PR standpoint, to appear indifferent to such an appeal.

Possibly he did show up as a thank you. But I find that Tiger does little for others without some ulterior motive. So maybe this time it was too show his corporate partners what a great guy he is.
