Amy Mickelson appeared brightly on golf’s radar screen in 1999 when Phil, who was contending for the US Open, said he would leave immediately to be by her side should she go into labor. After losing to Payne Stewart by a shot, Mickelson arrived home the next day in time for the birth of Amanda, their first child.
Over the years that followed we’ve witnessed the growth of the Mickelson family, which now is comprised of three children (Amanda 9, Sophia 7, and Evan 6). We’ve watched Mickelson grow as well from a contender to a three time major champion. And along the way we’ve enjoyed those victory celebrations which, on so many occasions, featured Amy and kids in center stage sharing heartfelt embraces or riding the shoulders of their conquering hero.
We’ve also been fortunate to get to know them as people. Phil, we know, is a fun loving prankster who smiles and signs autographs, goes on “dates” with his kids, loves science and the Chargers, and enjoys family days while on tour. Amy is very approachable when walking the course – a people person – just like her husband. We’ve heard about the good works she’s done for others, and her generous spirit. Indeed, the Mickelson’s appear to be living a perfect life despite his missteps at several US Opens.
And then came the announcement on Wednesday that Amy has breast cancer and will be going in for surgery within the next couple of weeks. Even though we are in the heart of the major’s season with the US Open just four weeks away, Phil will be at her side as he has canceled his schedule for now. And, because of her goodness, Amy will enjoy the support of the entire golf world.
Indeed, the Mickelson’s are arguably golf’s leading couple because they’ve allowed us to get to know them. They are good people who are good for the game – and if there is a gift in this tragic turn of events it is that we can now more fully appreciate what they mean to all of us.

Well said, Phil. Although the occasion is a sad one, Phil M. is to be congratulated for providing yet another conspicuous, public example of putting family first.
