Now that notables such as Adam Scott, Sean O’Hair, Rory McIlroy, Anthony Kim, and Trevor Immelman have been sent packing, we can now concentrate on those who made the cut.
Below are my picks among those who would look best with The PLAYERS trophy in their hands based on what they have accomplished so far in their careers.
Alex Cejka, the 36 hole leader at -11 would be a great story based on his great escape, but at age 38, with one top ten in a major he doesn’t make the list.
Ian Poulter (-9) This stylish 33 year old Englishman finished second at last year’s windblown British Open and has seven European Tour wins.
Angel Cabrera (-7) The PLAYERS would elevate him above the two major winners and further validate his two majors.
Henrik Stenson (-7) He finished 3t and 4t in the last two majors last year and is a former WGC Match Play champion.
David Toms (-7) With a major and 12 PGA Tour wins, this 42 year old would strengthen his case for the HOF with this title.
Camilo Villegas (-5) A rising star at age 27, he won two FedExCup events last year and finished 9t at the ’08 US Open and 4t at the ’08 PGA.
Ryan Moore (-5) He is a sentimental pick based on the promise he showed in winning five big amateur events in 2004.
Justin Leonard (-5) Twelve PGA Tour wins including a major and The PLAYERS make him a most worthy champion.
Retief Goosen (-5) Like Cabrera, a PLAYERS would elevate him a tad above the two time major winners.
Tiger Woods (-4) Always a worthy champion.
