Tiger Woods had until today to commit to next week’s WGC Accenture Match Play, but the news came on Thursday, the first day of the Northern Trust.
Now Tiger must have known days or even weeks ago that his comeback would come at the WGC considering the positively glowing reports of his health – and the fact that Accenture is one of his sponsors. And he’s media savvy enough to know that his return would be golf’s biggest story on the day it was announced.
If Tiger had thought this through, he would have announced his comeback on a slow news day like Monday. That would have given the golf world three days to droll over his return. That would also have allowed golf coverage time to recede from 98% Tiger to perhaps 70% Tiger by Thursday’s start to the Northern Trust.
If that had been the case, Phil Mickelson would have gotten his props for a sizzling round of 63. As it turned out, the scribes were united in saying that Phil was upstaged by Tiger’s return, sentiments I voiced in yesterday’s post.
Who knows what factors went into Tiger’s decision to let loose with this bombshell. But in this case, Tiger shanked a wedge shot, something he never does on the course.
