Enough of the Faldo – Azinger Media Blitz

September 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

No wonder the players want to captain the Ryder Cup team. The resulting PR bonanza could be worth millions in endorsements, especially to the leader of the winning team.

It seems like every story is about the dueling captains. This cup is about Nick Faldo versus Paul Azinger, two former major winners and TV personalities. These two have a bit of history between them despite the niceties and the photo ops that are saturating the media. There feud, real or imagined, is good copy – for a couple of days. It’s not the whole story.

The Golf Channel is a main culprit of the hype, running a series of the two competing at cards, fishing, and even a bit of golf, but other in the media are just as guilty.

I say enough already. With the Ryder Cup set to begin on Friday, it’s about time to shift the focus to the players. Despite the captains’ strategic genius that we will undoubtedly be privy to, the PLAYERS are the ones who will actually be determining which side of the Atlantic that the Cup will be residing on for the next 24 months.

You’re right, the Faldo-Azinger angle has been worked to death. It’s seemingly unavoidable in our infotainment-crazed age.
