Based on his record in the majors and the big season he’s now enjoying, there is no doubt that Sergio Garcia is The Best Player to Never Win a Major. At last year’s British Open he came within a quarter inch or so of becoming The First Player to Win a Major with a Long Putter. Thank god he missed.
Garcia has since reformed and is back to using a conventional putter, and is putting better than he has in ages. So is Vijay Singh, who went in the opposite direction – from short putter to the long putter.
Since converting back to the broom handle, it’s been feast or famine for Singh, but mostly he’s been feasting on the Tigerless fields. Since the US Open, here’s his line: 5, MC, 1, MC, MC, 1, 1. So far he’s tearing up the FedExCup, winning the first two starts to open up a 12,225 point lead over Garcia. Even if finished last this week and Garcia could won, he would still be leading going into the Tour Championship.
In other words, Singh is in an excellent position to become The First Player to Win the FedExCup with a Long Putter. While 99.9% of all golf writers will fail to see the significance of him winning using this atrocious weapon, I think it of monumental significance. First of all, win the cup with the broom will marginalize the event forever.
Even more importantly, as long as this club is allowed, it leaves the door open for the most ghastly sight you could ever imagine. Now picture this: Tiger Woods at age 38, his nerves shot, curls in a testy 6 footer to win his 19th major with belly putter jammed up against his stomach to quell the yips.
