Where Your Opinion Matters

The One and Only Josh Broadaway

July 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Josh Broadaway sounds close to Broadway Joe, which was the nickname for the legendary quarterback of the New York Jets. So, if Josh, who is currently plying his trade on the Nationwide Tour, hits the big time his name will make him easy to distinguish from the anonymous hordes of wannbe superstars.

And if you see him play, you’ll witness something that is quite unforgettable because he just might be the only pro on the planet who plays cross handed! I know, it’s got to be impossible to hit a ball that way, but Josh just finished 6t at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital tournament last weekend. For the week he averaged 294 yards off the tee, which was good for 28t. Check out his back nine on Sunday. He made two eagles, three pars, three bogeys and a double for a closing stretch as unusual as his name and his swing.

In an interview with Mark Williams he explained his reasons for using the most unorthodox grip in all of golf.

MARK WILLIAMS: Unusual to have a reverse grip.
JOSH BROADAWAY: When I was little, I didn’t have any left-handed gloves, and from hitting baseball and batting left-handed, it’s just the way I gripped it and all I had was right-handed gloves and I went with it. My grandfather taught me how to play the game but he didn’t teach me the grip. He said you’re going to have switch when you get older. I turned it around cross-handed and plugged it and I’m like, I’m just going with it.
MARK WILLIAMS: How many people a day tell you you should change?
JOSH BROADAWAY: Not many anymore. Not many anymore. When I was growing up, you know, a lot of people would tell me, you’re not going to be any good that way. But sometimes it works.

People are always complaining that golf is full of clones, that you can hardly tell the players apart now that they all act so professional and have such perfect looking swings. Well, should Broadaway Josh (reversing his names sounds cool) makes it to the big show, you can bet your seeing the original , for this guy’s not copying anyone.
