Geoff Ogilvy went into the Tiger’s den and came away a winner by four shots over golf’s hottest player. He now stands at -16 after three rounds of the WGC-CA, and has opened up a five shot lead over Woods.
Woods, who had played the par 5s in -8 the first two days, made four pars in round three and was the only player in the top 10 at the Blue Teddy Bear not to bust par. His 72 compared with an average of 65.22 for the other nine.
Woods is known for his ability to go low, but this time it’s asking a bit much. The course is playing too easy, he won’t be playing with Ogilvy, which will allow Geoff to breathe a little easier, and there four former majors winners ahead of him.
It looks like it’s Ogilvy’s tournament to win or lose at this point. Regardless, his return to the top of the golf world is a welcome development for the game as he we can always count on him to say something out of the ordinary.
As for Woods, a failure to win at Doral could be a blessing in disguise. There is enough pressure in golf, even for superhero like Woods. His most important task this year is to win at Augusta, something he hasn’t done since 2005, and to capture the first leg of the Grand Slam. That’s plenty on his plate without the added burden of a perfect season, which we know isn’t going to happen anyway.
